Irrigation Repair

This was a huge process at Dedham to take place over three years.  Dedham had been known to run out of water during dry stretches, and this was one of three charges I was given when taking over.
  1. First we repaired leaks that were attributed to bad drainage.  I estimate that there were 50 leaks that had to be repaired.  As anyone knows with a leaky toilet, small leaks add up.  Estimating an eight oz per minute leak would equal over 800,000 gallons of water wasted per year!
  2. We added wires and part circle heads for more control.   Rather than turning on 2 or 3 heads a time, we were now able to turn one head on.  This allowed us to really pinpoint the areas that needed it.  The addition of part circle heads stopped certain areas from being water twice, kept water out of the newly established fescue areas, kept water out of the woods or ponds, and from water parking lots or cart paths.
  3. We rehabbed a well that was used since the sixties and abandoned in the 1990's.  This will provide 30 to 40 gallons a minute which is enough to keep greens and tees alive should we run out.
  4. We had a dry summer in 2005 and we had more than enough water.  Why?  Because every little bit of conservation that we did helped.  We hand watered greens for maximum firmness and root growth, we spot watered fairways for the same reasons.  We know have a great crop of desirable grasses on our greens and fairways (bents).

Some pictures of the general disrepair of the irrigation system.  This situation was a common one on the golf course:
