Tenth Hole Drainage Work
The 10th hole years ago was one of the wettest holes on the course. A ditch to the right of the fairway was installed which replaced a failing pipe and some fairway drainage was installed.
The stone that was used was very large in diameter, so in time all the soil washed into the pipe stone trenches and into the pipes. Stone came all the way up to the turf surface, and drainlines routinely burned out.

We stripped the sod and removed the contaminated stones.

Refilled the trench with smaller size stone (3/8") and topped off with a 60% sand 40% soil mix.

We installed catch basins at the low spots or where there were was a multiple pipe connection to be made.

It looks good. It will still probably be prone to wilt as the pipe is not very deep, but it is a solid improvement. Once we have caught up with all the drainage emergncies, we will start to replace pipe in coming years, trying to get it down deep and backfilled with the right material. The old Seth Raynor drainage is fine, that is deep and done with very good pipe. The movement in drainage in the 90's was focused on thin walled plastic pipe and it was designed for surface water.

This wasn't the only line we did on ten...we repaired about 15 breaks and installed about 10 catch basins in fairway. This hole is already performing better this winter. A few more years of fairway topdressing and this will be a different hole.
