Eighth Well Construction
After searching the property for a high producing well, we settled on restoring an old well. But rather than just digging the well over again, we created a linear well, a hundred foot line of five shallow wells. This will produce 30 to 40 gallons per minute. Not the homerun we were looking for, but enough to keep greens and tees alive should the 8th pond run out of water. Given all the improvements to the health of our turf and to the operation of our irrigation system, it will be a rare season that we run out of water. 2005 was a good test of this, there was no rain in July and August and the well system was not even operating at full capacity, and we still had a full pond. At the end of the summer in 2007 the pond did run low and we were able to keep tees, greens, and fairways in good shape. Dedham will always do better with less rain than more.
The well drilling company shows up with these types of pipe, almost like steel drainage pipe.
They pound the pipes into the ground, they did this at 20 foot intervals for 100 feet. All the pipe went down into a sand bank about 20' deep before hitting bedrock. This sand bank holds groundwater.
We connected all the wells:
The green box houses the suction pump.
Picture next to the new well pump in the green box, is the old well that was used for years and then abandoned 10 years ago.
